Sword-Catching Parrying Dagger

Dated: 1600

Culture: Italian

This unusual fencing dagger demonstrates the way in which the artistic qualities of a weapon could be influenced by the practical concerns of the swordsman. The Renaissance duel was usually fought with rapier and dagger. The rapier, as the main weapon of attack, was complemented by a parrying dagger held in the left hand, used primarily for defensive movements.

However, by 1600 fighting with the rapier alone was becoming the latest fashion. The opposing blade could still be parried or beaten away with the left hand. The free left also allowed the duellist to grab hold of his enemy’s swordblade, temporarily immobilising it to expose him to a lethal counter-thrust.

This distinctive fencing weapon is designed to provide the blade-grabbing ability of the free left hand, while retaining the dagger for defensive action. The arrow-like barbs allowed a sword blade to enter the ‘jaw’ of the dagger, but made it difficult to free it again. With his weapon ensnared, the enemy was exposed, if only for an instant.

The practical challenges of creating such a specialised weapon were considerable. The hardened and tempered steel blade had to be carefully cut with the series of dramatically barbed teeth, a laborious process. The spaces between the teeth have been elegantly filed with ornamental edges, while the base of the blade has been finely etched and gilt- an unusual feature, even for high-quality weapons. In this way, despite its very specific function as a fighting tool, the weapon’s artistic merit is evident.

Oun Sambath and his pet python.

A few months after Oun Sambath was born, his family found a baby python under his mattress. They carefully took it outside, but during the night it returned to be with the baby boy. The boy’s father prayed, and decided that the snake belonged to the boy and would bring them happiness.

The boy and the snake have been together ever since. They have played together, have slept together, and even have talked together.

“What do you say to the snake?” People have asked the boy.

“That is a secret,” the boy has replied.

[the link to the article]

Snake love is best love.

have I mentioned that I’m a snake person?

Omg do you know what this reminds me of?!?!

The old pre-colonial Visayan belief of one having a snake twin. Literally it’s a snake that is actually a spirit of a dead ancestor that is born with the person often staying close with them never really leaving their side and was said to lead that person to success and was seen as a symbol of luck and that one was blessed by the ancestors. The early Spaniards noted this widespread belief and some wrote stories of those who gave birth to a baby snake often mistaking it as parts of the placenta. In Alcina’s writings he writes of one incident where the mother was to afraid to have found the snake in the placenta and brought it outside. It eventually came back to be with her boy and still scared of the snake they moved away hoping it wouldn’t find them again.

This bond with this boy pretty much is a living example of that old belief. :D

Write With Your Internal Editor Gagged And Shoved In A Box

Editing as you go is a perfectly viable way to write.

It is not a perfectly viable way to write quickly and to maximize your word count.

Editing as you go is recursive — write a thing, go back over that same thing once, twice, as many times as your obsessive nature demands. You’re treading the same ground. Walking in the same footprints. Like I say: totally viable in terms of process if that’s what works. But it doesn’t move you forward very quickly and that’s the goal, here, at least in terms of this post –

To write a lot, and to do it with some speed.

Which means you need to shut your internal editor up. Elbow him in the throat and shove him in a duffel bag. Remind him his time will come. The editor always gets the last laugh.

“Start the day with a mission statement” is one I’m going to take to heart, but I know some people who need to hear this advice about internal editors.

"The easiest part of the writing process is whichever part I’m not currently doing."

“The easiest part of the writing process is whichever part I’m not currently doing.”

- Scott Tracey (via n-princess)

The 36 Dramatic Situations

writeworld:

prompts-and-pointers:

When people are looking for plot ideas or new events to sprinkle into their roleplays, the first place I am going to point them is to this article.

Published first in a french book of the same title in the 19th century, this list has been of a massive aid to writers ever since. Written by french writer Georges Polti, it was meant to categorize every possible situation which might occur in anything from a poem to a play. The list came about after extensive studies of Greek texts, french literature, as well as non-french literature. Polti claimed to continue the work of Carlo Gozzi, who had also, himself, found these thirty-six situations.

1. Supplication

Required Elements : a Persecutor; a Suppliant; a Power in authority whose decision is doubtful

The Persecutor accuses the Suppliant of wrongdoing, and the Power makes a judgement against the Suppliant.

2. Deliverance

Required Elements : an Unfortunate; a Threatener; a Rescuer

The Unfortunate has caused a conflict, and the Threatener is to carry out justice, but the Rescuer saves the Unfortunate.

3. Crime

Required Elements : a Criminal; an Avenger

The Criminal commits a crime that will not see justice, so the Avenger seeks justice by punishing the Criminal.

4. Vengeance Taken for Kin upon Kin

Required Elements : Guilty Kinsman; an Avenging Kinsman; remembrance of the Victim, a relative of both

Two entities, the Guilty and the Avenging Kinsmen, are put into conflict over wrongdoing to the Victim, who is allied to both.

5. Pursuit

Required Elements : Punishment; a Fugitive

The Fugitive flees Punishment for a misunderstood conflict.

6. Disaster

Required Elements : a Vanquished Power; a Victorious Enemy or a Messenger

The Power falls from their place after being defeated by the Victorious Enemy or being informed of such a defeat by the Messenger

7. Falling Prey to Cruelty/Misfortune

Required Elements : an Unfortunate; a Master or a Misfortune

The Unfortunate suffers from Misfortune and/or at the hands of the Master

8. Revolt

Required Elements : a Tyrant; a Conspirator

The Tyrant, a cruel power, is plotted against by the Conspirator.

9. Daring Enterprise

Required Elements : a Bold Leader; an Object; an Adversary

The Bold Leader takes the Object from the Adversary by overpowering the Adversary

10. Abduction

Required Elements : an Abductor; the Abducted; a Guardian

The Abductor takes the Abducted from the Guardian.

She leaves the comfort of her own wordsmithy and she traipses through many fictional worlds written by many writers and along the way she pokes through their writings to see if her voice is in there somewhere. She takes what she reads and she mimics their voices, snatching little pieces of other authors with her in her mind and on the page.

Is her voice cynical? Optimistic? Short and curt, or long and breezy? She doesn’t know and so she reads and she writes and she lives life in an effort to find out.

This adventure takes as long as it takes, but one day the author tires of it and she comes home, empty-handed, still uncertain what her voice looks like or sounds like.

And there, at home, she discovers her voice is waiting. In fact, it’s been there all along.

Your voice is how you write when you’re not trying to find your voice. Your voice is the way you write, the way you talk. Your voice is who you are, what you believe, what themes you knowingly and unknowingly embrace. Your voice is you. Search for it and you won’t find it.

Ivory-Hilted Moro Fighting Keris Sword

Dated: circa 1820-50

Measurements: Blade is 21 inches long (53.34cm). 26 inches overall (66cm)

The nicely carved ivory hilt retains its original wrapped grip. This might be a fighting sword and it’s most likely an early 19th century example.

ninth-level-of-awesome:

I love how Tumblr teaches us how to be perfect criminals.

Also, if you’re burying a full body, make sure you bury them vertically. Satellites orbiting earth look for holes that are approx. 6ft long because that’s suspicious. Ideally though, drain your body of fluids in a tub ((mix fluids with bleach and let them soak before draining and take precautions to keep your house from smelling like death from your sink and whatnot. Draining the body also keeps decomp at bay a bit and makes it easier to portion)) and cut it to bits. It’s easier to bury a head than a whole body, and takes less time so you don’t have to tell your neighbors, “Oh, I’m night gardening!”

Also, if a dog happens across it, it’s more likely it will devour a single body part than all of your ex-husband.

Another method is to put it into a septic tank. They’re a plethora of bacteria, and the smell of waste covers the smell of decomposition very well.

You should also destroy all teeth, massacre the face and burn fingerprints/remove finger tips to keep from identifying by anything other than DNA.

…I didn’t come up with these ideas, just what I’ve gleaned from reading on the internet.

i used to joke about Tumblr teaching us how to get away with murder, but fuck, man

the thing is when i see this i want to go kill a man just because i have the knowledge

thanks tumblr

Remember when you’re at the crime scene to wipe down all surfaces and then take the victims hands and touch things with them. Pick up cups and run the hands along table tops. A room with zero fingerprints is very suspicious.

If you live near the ocean you can drain the body and cut up the cadaver into small pieces then mix it all together with fish parts and dispose of it easily by pretending to chum the water for fish and sharks. Actually do chum the water a bit before dumping in your victim to be sure there are plenty of hungry fish around. Stick around and fish for a while so anyone who happens to see you won’t get suspicious. This way you don’t have any body parts lying around waiting to be dug up and identified. Plus you might catch a marlin or something.

PLUS YOU MIGHT CATCH A MARLIN

Jesus fucking christ Tumblr

This is great. But ya’ll forgot to make sure there’s nothing with your name in the trash that you dump yah body parts in.

If you can get your hands on some sodium hydroxide (e.g. from like a soap supply store, remember pay cash and use a fake name etc) this will totally screw the dna analysis from the blood if you spray the shit everywhere you wont even have to clean the blood at the scene up

AND, in prep the unlikely situation (if you didn’t follow these instructions correctly) your body is found, make sure you remove the mandible from the head and deposit it else where. Preferably a couple of miles (way over twenty I suggest) from where you hid the original body.

The mandible is used in facial reconstruction a lot and without the mandible they cannot collect a clear picture of what your victim looked like. This was they cannot use missing persons as easily and if they do it would take them even longer. More than likely without the mandible, a massacred face, no teeth and burnt of fingertips you should be looking at your victim being a John Doe. For a very long time.

Oh and in case it hadn’t already occurred to you, buy a weapon to do the deed. Not an unusual weapon, not using a credit card, not in a main department store (preferably). I suggest everyday kitchen utensils or gardening equipment that would be common in most household homes. Look online and do some reason, the more popular a product the more you should use it. That way they can’t exactly look back at the sales records.

And don’t keep that weapon in the house or anyway near your residence. Don’t even bury it with the main body. I’d bury it with the mandible myself. Make sure you leave no finger prints, wear gloves etc. This isn’t exactly rocket science so you should understand it quite easily.

personally im more excited about the marlin.

very tempted to try killing a person now just to see if I could get away with it
